Introduction
The Australian Girls Choir performs at many events around Australia every year. The Performing Choir in each state performs at the majority of public engagements ranging from sporting events, awards nights, corporate events, celebration concerts to regular television and radio appearances and at high profile events such as the AFL Grand Final, Carols By Candlelight, Carols in the Domain, Bledisloe Cup and the South Australian Christmas Pageant.
The Australian Girls Choir is best recognised for its involvement in the highly successful Qantas 'I Still Call Australia Home' advertising campaigns. Filmed in spectacular locations around Australia and the world, the campaigns have provided our choristers with once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and broadened their horizons musically, culturally and personally.
Every year the girls are invited to perform at events that give them a unique opportunity to meet some amazing people and performers. Recently, one hundred choristers in each state were invited to perform 'I Still Call Australia Home' alongside Hugh Jackman in the 'Boy from Oz' Arena Musical. The girls received a standing ovation from packed audiences in each of the 38 performances.
In 2000 the girls were honoured to perform for Nelson Mandela at World Reconciliation Day Celebrations in Sydney and Melbourne. There was not a dry eye in the house when Mr Mandela took the time to meet each of our choristers individually. To one chorister he was heard to say "You make me very happy", she replied "You make us happy too".
The girls perform a variety of musical styles including Australiana, Broadway Show Tunes, Aboriginal music, Contemporary, Folk Songs, Art Songs and Negro Spirituals. The Performing Choir works with a professional choreographer on a regular basis; this training enables them to present a uniquely entertaining and professional performance.
The Performing Choir consists of approximately 60 - 80 choristers in each state. On occasion the senior levels of the choir combine to form a larger group of up to 150 choristers. This requires considerable organisation but creates a powerful massed choir sound and presentation. Younger choristers are sometimes involved in performances that require a more youthful sound and look.
